Lead Paint & Home Renovations

Lead Paint

Lead-based paint was used in more than 38 million homes and businesses until it was banned for residential use in 1978. Beginning in April 2010, EPA federal law will require contractors that disturb lead-based paint in homes, businesses, and schools to be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. This law will only apply to buildings which were constructed before 1978.

What Problems can Lead Cause?

Lead dust, which is often invisible, is the most common way people are exposed to lead. People can also get lead in their bodies from exposure to lead in soil or paint chips.

Lead can affect children's brains and developing nervous systems, causing reduced IQ, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems.

May cause High blood pressure and hypertension in adults.

Should I be Concerned?

Do you reside in a home built before 1978?

Do you own or operate a child care facility, including preschools and kindergarten classrooms, built before 1978?

Do you have a child under six who attends a child care facility built before 1978?

There are other things you can do to protect your family every day.

Regularly clean floors, window sills, and other surfaces

Wash children's hands, bottles, pacifiers, and toys often

Make sure children eat a healthy, nutritious diet consistent with the USDA's dietary guidelines, which helps protect children from the effects of lead

Wipe off shoes before entering house

For additional information about the sources and hazards of lead, please visit http://www.epa.gov/lead/.

Where Does the Lead Come From?

The most common way to get lead in the body is from invisible dust. Lead dust comes from deteriorating lead-based paint and lead-contaminated soil that gets tracked into your home. This dust may accumulate to unsafe levels within the home. Then, normal hand to-mouth activities, like playing and eating (especially for young children), move that dust from surfaces like floors and window sills into the body.

Home renovation creates dust, especially in homes build before 1978. Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips.

Proper work practices can protect you from the dust. The key to protecting yourself and your family during a renovation, repair or painting job is to use lead-safe work practices such as containing dust inside the work area, using dust-minimizing work methods, and conducting a careful cleanup.

Remember, lead can also come from outside soil, deteriorating lead paint, your tap water, or household items (such as lead-glazed pottery and lead crystal). For additional information regarding the causes and sources of lead, please visit http://www.epa.gov/lead/.

Checking Your Home for Lead-Based Paint

Especially in older homes and buildings (pre-1978), you may simply want to assume lead-based paint is present and follow the lead-safe work practices during the renovation, repair, or painting job.

You may also test for lead using a lead test kit. Test kits must be EPA-approved and are available at hardware stores. They include detailed instructions for their use.

We recommend you hire a Window World certified professional to check for lead-based paint. These professionals are certified risk assessors or inspectors, and can determine if your home has lead or lead hazards.

A certified inspector or risk assessor can conduct an inspection telling you whether your home, or a portion of your home, has lead-based paint and where it is located. This will tell you the areas in your home where lead-safe work practices are needed. They can also conduct a risk assessment telling you if your home currently has any lead hazards from lead in paint, dust, or soil. The risk assessor can also tell you what actions to take to address any hazards.

Please contact Window World for help finding a certified risk assessor or lead inspector.

Preparing for a Lead Renovation

The work areas should not be accessible to occupants while the work occurs. The rooms or areas where work is being done may be blocked off or sealed with plastic sheeting to contain any dust that is generated. The contained area will not be available to you until the work in that room or area is complete, cleaned thoroughly, and the containment has been removed. You will not have access to some areas within your home, and you should plan accordingly.

You may need:

Alternative bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen arrangements if work is occurring in those areas of your home.

A safe place for pets because they too, can be poisoned by lead and can track lead dust into other areas of the home.

A separate pathway for the contractor from the work area to the outside, in order to bring materials in and out of the home. Ideally, it should not be through the same entrance that your family uses.

A place to store your furniture. All furniture and belongings may have to be moved from the work area while the work is done. Items that can't be moved, such as cabinets, should be wrapped in heavy duty plastic.

To turn off forced-air heating and air conditioning systems while work is done. This prevents dust from spreading through vents from the work area to the rest of your home

For large scale projects, you may even want to move out of your home temporarily while all or parts of the work are being done.

During the Work

Before the renovation work is started, Window World professionals will follow the procedures described below:

Contain the work area. The area should be contained so that dust and debris do not escape from that area. Warning signs should be put up and heavy-duty plastic and tape should be used as appropriate to:

Cover the floors and any furniture that cannot be moved.

Seal off doors and heating and cooling system vents. These will help prevent dust or debris from getting outside the work area.

It is very important to minimize dust. There is no way to eliminate dust, but some methods make less dust than others. For example, using water to mist areas before sanding or scraping; scoring paint before separating components; and prying and pulling apart components instead of breaking them are techniques that generate less dust than alternatives.

Clean up thoroughly. The work area will be cleaned up daily to keep it as clean as possible. When all the work is done, the area should be cleaned up using special cleaning methods before taking down any plastic that isolates the work area from the rest of the home. The special cleaning methods should include using a HEPA vacuum to clean up dust and debris on all surfaces, followed by wet mopping with plenty of rinse water.

When the final cleaning is done, look around. There should be no dust, paint chips, or debris in the work area. If you see any dust, paint chips, or debris, the area should be re-cleaned.

Window World's new replacement windows provide substantial energy efficiency and savings for your home. We have saved money and energy for homeowners throughout the nation.

ENERGYSTAR® Qualified SolarZone™ Insulated Glass Package

What Makes the SolarZone™ Insulated Glass Package So Effective?
Since 80% of a window is made of glass, a substantial amount of heating and cooling savings come from improved glass performance.

Our combination of UV-filtering Low-E Glass (LG), insulating argon gas, and the Intercept™ Warm Edge Spacer System creates significant energy efficiency.

Together they can cut the damaging effects of the sun, which can lead to faded carpets, curtains, and furniture.

In winter, a warmer glass temperature is maintained, increasing the R-value by an additional 104%.

In summer, a 48% reduction in solar heat gain helps cut air conditioning costs.

The result: your monthly utility bills will reflect savings year round - and that should help make you even more comfortable.

How does Low-E Glass (LG) work?
A) Low-E glass filters long-wave radiation from the sun. This reduces solar heat gain from the sun in the summer...keeping your home cooler:
B) Low-E glass takes on a new duty in winter months. It lets warm solar rays into your home...while blocking the heat in your home from getting out:

How does the Intercept™ Spacer System work?

Its one-piece metal alloy, U-channel design creates an effective thermal barrier to help reduce conducted heat loss.

Its sealed one-piece design makes it stronger and better at retaining insulating gas than many conventional designs.

How do Intercept™ Spacers add to room comfort?

They keep the edges of the window glass warmer, so your home feels more comfortable in winter.

The temperature difference between the edge of an insulating glass unit with an ordinary spacer, and one with an Intercept™ spacer system can be dramatic.

How do Intercept™ Spacers Help Windows to Last Longer?

LG units expand and contract with temperature changes.

In conventional insulating glass units, the sealant holding the unit together takes the stress of this flexing and can cause seal failure and insulating gas loss.

In an Intercept™ LG. unit, the spacer flexes instead of the sealant, so it resists spacer movement and premature sealant failure.

Thermagraphy dramatizes the difference.
The window on the left is a clear insulated glass unit. The heat transmittance, indicated by the green, yellow and orange colors from the heat scale, is far more apparent than that of the window containing the Solarban® 60 Low-E insulated glass unit.

Energy Efficiency Adds Up

By adding Low-E glass to a standard insulating glass unit, you can improve the energy performance of your window year round by 24%.

Also, by adding argon gas filling to the window, which is a better insulator than normal air, you can increase the efficiency by another 6%.

And lastly, by adding the Intercept™ Warm Edge Spacer System, you can add yet another 5%!

That's why your choice of ComfortWorld Windows with the SolarZone™ Insulated Glass Package is the most energy efficient window product on the market today!

Seal Failure is when condensation makes it’s way between the two panes of glass. This is rare, in fact most of the time the condensation is either on the inside or outside of the glass. Use a cloth to clean both sides of the glass before filling the warranty form.

Glass breakage and seal failure replacement is only available if you purchased your windows with a warranty that covers breakage & seal failure. Once your claim has been filed it will take 2 or more weeks to receive a new sash. While your warranty is being processed we recommend that you tape the broken window with a clear duct tape to prevent injury. We will notify you as soon as the new sash has been received.

Fogging / Condensation on Exterior Surfaces of Glass

Exteriors Condensation on Windows

Condensation on the exterior of the galss surface is completely normal and dependant on weather conditions.

Common household condensation or “sweating” on windows is caused by excess humidity or water vapor in the air comes in contact with a cold surface such as a mirror or glass window, it turns to water droplets and is called condensation. All homes have occasional condensation.

On the other hand, excessive window condensation, frost, peeling paint, even moisture spots on ceilings and walls can be signs of excessive condensation and potentially damaging problems in your home. We tend to notice condensation on window and mirrors first because moisture doesn't penetrate these surfaces. Yet they are not the problem, simply the indicators that you need to reduce the indoor humidity of your home.

Conquering the myth. Windows do not cause condensation.

You may be wondering why your new energy-efficient replacement windows show more condensation than your old drafty ones. Well, your old windows allowed humidity to escape. Now that your new windows create a tighter seal, the extra moisture in your home is unable to escape, therefore making you more aware of excess humidity. Windows do not cause condensation, instead they prevent humidity from escaping and provide an easy surface for condensation to collect.

Where does Indoor Humidity come from

All air contains a certain amount of moisture, even indoors. And there are many common things that generate indoor humidity such as your heating system, humidifiers, cooking and showers. In fact, every activity that involves water, even mopping the floors, contributes moisture to the home.
Condensation is more likely to occur in homes where January temperatures drop below 35F because there are greater temperature extremes affecting the glass in the home.

It is very normal to experience condensation at the start of each heating season. During the humid summer month your home absorbs moisture and then perspires when you turn on the first few week of heating your home should dry out, reducing if not eliminating condensation.
You’ll notice the same remodeling or building. Due to the high levels of moisture in wood, plaster and other building materials, your home will temporarily sweat during the first few weeks of the heating season.

Another factor in the condensation equation is progress. With today’s modern insulation, moisture-barrier materials and air-tight construction, we all enjoy a more thermally efficient home-one that block the cold out, yet traps the moisture in producing higher humidity levels and…. more condensation.

Reducing Humidity is the key.

The best way to reduce condensation is by eliminating excessive humidity. So, how much humidity is too much? The following table illustrates the recommended comfortable levels of indoor humidity during the winter months.

(Indoor humidity can be measured with a humistat or psychrometer.)

By eliminating excessive humidity in your home you may very well eliminate most, if not all, of your condensation problems.

Six simple solutions to controlling Indoor Humidity.

Make sure all sources of ventilation to the outside are functional, and use kitchen, bathroom and laundry room exhaust fans during and after humidity-producing activities to vent excess moisture.

Air out your home periodically. Opening windows for just a few minutes a day lets the stale moist air escape and the fresh dry air enter without compromising your heating.

Check your humidifier setting. Use the humidity comfort levels provided in the table to correctly set and balance the humidity level in your home.

Be sure that all louvers in the attic or basement are open and large enough. You can even open your fireplace dampers to allow excess moisture to escape.

If you have a large amount of house plants, try to concentrate them in one area and watch over watering.

If troublesome condensation persists, see your heating contractor about an outside air intake for your furnace, venting of gas burning heaters and appliances, or installation of ventilating fans.

Please review the scenarios listed below to correct your locking problem.

	Unable to lock the window:
Unlock the window completely. Push the upper sash upward, as far as it will move and pull the lower sash to the bottom of the window. Once both sashes are in their proper positions, you will be able to engage the lock.

The top sash has dropped from its pocket:
Push the upper sash all the way to the top while at the same time pushing the lower sash down. You may need an additional person to aid you. This should align and allow you to engage the window lock.

The sashes are not aligned correctly in the channel:
Tilt each sash in as if you are cleaning the windows. Push both sashes firmly back into the window channel. This should align the sash and allow the window to lock properly.

	Balance shoe is disengaged:
If the balance shoe becomes disengaged from the sash, the window will not lock because it is misaligned. To correct this situation, please refer to the section on "Windows Dropping Down".

If the instructions listed above do not correct the problem, please call us for further assistance.

{image_1} {image_2} {image_3} {image_4}

A dropping window is usually caused by the window shoes coming off the pivot bar:

A. Using a flat bladed screwdriver, insert it into the metal part of the shoe that has a "U" shape grove in it. The upright "U" is the locked position.

B. Using a decent amount of force, turn the screwdriver clockwise until the "U" turns into a "C" shape. This is the unlocked position.

NOTE: The shoe is spring loaded. Make sure to hold the shoe so that it doesn't go all of the way up.

C. Bring the shoe up 3"-4" and twist the screw driver back counterclockwise to bring the grove back to the "U" or locked position. Now remove the flathead screwdriver that was holding the shoe.

D. Now bring the sash down to the level of the shoe.

E. With the tilt latch, tilt the window open. Ensure that the sash is level to the floor.

F. Press on the window near the shoe to force it into the shoe.

G. Close the sash.

H. Pull the sash UPWARD to ensure the shoe has engaged. If the shoe has not engaged, you will need to repeat step 4 through 7. If the shoe is properly connected you will not see it any longer and the window will function properly.

NOTE: Do not remove sash unless absolutely necessary.

Maintaining Your New Windows

Once your new windows are installed, you'll want to care for them so that they'll continue to look great and add curb appeal to your home for years to come. A minimum semi-annual cleaning is recommended. Here are some tips for washing without compromising any elements of your vinyl windows:

Do's for Caring for your Windows:

Start with just water and a soft cloth. If necessary, you can use a mild cleaner.

	Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

If lubrication is needed, use a silicone spray.

Dont's for Caring for your Windows:

Use Power washers or high-pressure sprays: the force of the liquid could damage the caulking around the window, which ensures water-tightness.

Use liquid grease remover, strong soaps and detergents containing organic solvents, nail polish/ paint remover, furniture polish, or cleaners containing chlorine bleach, as these substances are potentially damaging to the surface of the vinyl.

Use sharp objects during the cleaning process.

Even mildly abrasive cleaners, like Soft Scrub, can scratch the surface of the glass or Window frame: avoid the use of any abrasive agent.

Use oil-based spray lubricants such as WD-40, as they attract dirt.

	Paint or varnish vinyl windows.

Cleaning a Screen:

Screens can be cleaned easily with a soft brush accessory of a vacuum.

Cleaning Tracks:

Tracks can be washed with a small, stiff nylon brush, then wiped down with a soft cloth. It is important to ensure that the tracks are free of the dirt, leaves, sand, grease, or other outdoor elements as they can be ground into the vinyl tracks when the sashes are operated.

Cleaners for Vinyl:

	Fantastik

	Murphy Oil Soap

Solution of 30% Vinegar and 70% Water

	Lestoil

If, after trying the options listed above, you still cannot remove a stain, try using mineral spirits or a 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution. However, make sure that after using one of these options, you wash the area with soap and water and wipe clean.

Cleaners for Caulk:

	GoofOff2

Cleaners for Glass:

Regular or ammonia-based glass cleaners, like Windex
