Fall Energy Savings

Posted on November 03, 2015

Even though colder weather is right around the corner, that doesn’t mean your energy bill has to suffer, too! There are plenty of easy ways to save a pretty penny in the fall (and winter) months. Saving money in regards to energy just means giving it a little more thought. Most of these things are common sense, but we forget to do them a lot of times. Here are several examples from The Department of Energy of ways to save money and energy.

Cover drafty windows
If you have old windows, make sure to cover the inside of your windows with a clear plastic film to reduce the cold outside air from seeping through seams. Fall is a great time to consider window replacement as a home project idea. Energy-efficient windows can save you big bucks on your electric bill and make your home more comfortable.

Take advantage of heat from the sun
Solar heat doesn’t cost anything! Cut back on heating costs, and open your windows to allow sunlight to heat your home. Remember to close them at night because cold windows can have a big impact on the temperature inside.

Be smart when using your fireplace
Always remember to close your fireplace when it’s not in use because cold air can easily come inside and make your living room (or wherever your fireplace is located) way too chilly. If you don’t plan on using your fireplace at all, be sure to plug and seal the chimney. Add caulking around the fireplace to reduce heat loss.

Lower the costs of water heating and electricity
Turn down the temperature of your water heater only to the warm setting, which is around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. On the same token, using LED holiday lights will greatly reduce the expense of having your home nicely decorated.

Always keep up with your heating system’s maintenance
If you have a furnace, replace the filter about once a month. Get your HVAC system tuned-up by a reputable heating and air conditioning company. If you have a wood- or pellet-burning heater, clean the vent as often as possible and clean the inside of the appliance with a wire brush to avoid any fires.
